HISTORY/OVERVIEW:
The
Merchandise Mart is named and listed on the National Historic
Places as the Ligget and Myers/Rice-Stix Building, a remnant from
the past owner’s prominent business in the sale of dry goods.
This impressive structure was erected in 1880 and represents the
Jewel of the undeveloped structures in the now resurgent Downtown
of St. Louis. It was the cornerstone development to
spur the creation of the vibrant Washington Avenue Loft District
which has since experienced the renaissance of night life,
restaurants, galleries and shops. The Mart’s high ceilings,
hard wood floors, exposed brick, expansive windows, and central
location will beautify downtown as luxury apartments.
